The top single for the past week was . . . EXILE TRIBE’s “THE REVOLUTION” which popped up from #129 to #1 in its fifth week by selling 156,271 copies to boost its total to 483,062. Really? Well, there’s no doubt at this point that we have some crazy manipulation on this one, since this is nothing like a normal sales curve. Even if the single sold just 100k in its first week, it shouldn’t have ended up all the way out of the top 100 in just its fourth week. And just like with that EXILE single a while back, it looks like the net goal is to get in the year-end top 10 by pushing everyone else up to and including Arashi, SKE48, and Nogizaka46 down a step.
If not for the EXILE TRIBE jump, it would have been 2PM’s “Midaretemina” at the top. As it was, it had to settle for #2 with 95,097 copies sold.

Southern All Stars saw their latest single, “Tokyo Victory”, take #6 in its second week. It sold a very strong 18,468 to boost its total to 111,113.
In its eleventh week, Nogizaka46’s “Natsu no Free & Easy” tacked on 6,598 in sales at #13, bringing its total to 508,856.
Taking #15 in its third week, Hey! Say! JUMP’s “Weekender/Ashita e no Yell” got above 200k, selling 5,528 to reach a total of 204,097 copies sold.
“Highschool Love” from E-girls took #19, selling 4,540 to bring its two week total to 65,586.
Okay, so this month’s episodes of Gamushara J’s Party!! (ガムシャラ J’s Party!!) are that thing they’ve been building up to all summer in Gamushara – the Summer Festival. It’s going to be a very different pair of J’s Party episodes than we’ve been getting the past few months because there will be at least twenty juniors involved rather than the usual ten – the sort of breadth that I’ve been pushing for. At first glance, this should be exactly what I’ve wanted to see on this show.
It all begins with an extended look at how everything started in February and some of the challenge highlights along the way . . .
. . . and then a clip of the Natsu Matsuri announcement . . .
. . . and finally an explanation of the four teams and their challenges. Altogether, that intro VTR took almost four minutes – not the best possible start to a show (it’s always better to get directly into the action and save the exposition for a little further in).
We finally got to the main event with Marius Yo-kun of Sexy Zone doing a squeaky introduction in English and Japanese. He and fellow SZ member Matsushima Sou-kun were the only two debuted Johnny’s members present.
Other than the twenty juniors participating in the challenges, there were also a lot of chibi juniors present dressed in white costumes. The opening song was a theme written specifically for the show – “Gamusharara” – and it was performed by the two SZ members, Iwahashi Genki, Jinguji Yuta, Matsumura Kaito, and Matsuda Genta. They weren’t the only ones singing, though – the white-clad juniors were also miked up, so no chance to assess vocals on this one.
The top single for the past week was “Tokyo Victory” from Southern All Stars, which sold 92,645 copies. The group has highly variable single sales and an album-buying fanbase, so there’s no way to assess this result.
At #2 was “Highschool Love” by E-girls, which sold a solid 61,046.
B1A4 took #3 with the Japanese version of “Solo Day” selling 47,479.
“Get Up!” from Nakayama Yuma-kun started out at #4 with the sale of 34,435 copies.
Hey! Say! JUMP’s “Weekender/Ashita e no YELL” was at #11 in its second week, selling 14,060 to bring its total to 198,569. That’s a bit on the weak side at around 7.6% of first week sales.
In its third week, AKB48’s “Kokoro no Placard” took #14 with 7,834 copies sold and a total of 1,035,154.
Right behind their sister group at #15, SKE48 saw 6,035 more copies of their “Bukiyou Taiyou” sold, getting its seven week total to 441,680.
Nogizaka46’s “Natsu no Free & Easy” was in at #18, selling 4,619 in its tenth week to boost its total above the double platinum level to 502,258.
Taking #19 in week two, “Always with you” by Generations from EXILE TRIBE sold 4,418, which is a solid 10% of first week sales, bringing its total to 49,195.
“Geragerapo no Uta” from King Cream Soda sold 2,914 at #25 in its twentieth week, now boasting a total of 110,138 copies sold.
At #29, Golden Bomber’s “Roller no Kizudarake” has a four-week total of 65,668.
On the album side, Takeuchi Mariya-san’s “TRAD” got the top spot, selling 118,697 copies.
WINNER took #2 with “2014 S/S -Japan Collection-” seeing 35,079 copies sold.
In week two, “Mr. S” from SMAP sold 17,716 to bring its total to 201,883.
Ariana Grande’s “My Everything” held on to #6 by selling 11,897 copies, getting its three-week total to 49,692.
Taking #8 in its third week, EXILE TRIBE’s “EXILE TRIBE REVOLUTION” sold 10,000 copies (amazing that it’s exactly 10,000) to push its total to 304,624.
Shounen Club (ザ少年倶楽部) is a music variety show hosted by Kawai Fumito of A.B.C-Z and Kiriyama Akito of Johnny’s West that showcases the song-and-dance skills of the Johnny’s Entertainment agency’s most recently debuted groups – A.B.C-Z, Sexy Zone, and Johnny’s West – as well as the agency’s trainees (known as juniors).
The second episode for September begins with A.B.C-Z introducing the theme of the show – 15th anniversary year again, even though I still have no idea how they figure that – and then performing “Legend Story”. Hashimoto-kun’s opening wasn’t quite as striking as before – more muted this time.
Maybe it’s because it’s at the start of the show, but it seemed lacking in energy and not as sharp as the previous time I saw this performed.
So, I’d call that an iffy opening. The song itself could probably work if it was done with some over-the-top exuberance, but they were restrained on it this time.
Moving along, Kawai-kun and Kiriyama-kun introduced the first performers – Hirano Sho, Nagase Ren, and Takahashi Kaito. This is a bit unusual since we’ve normally had one of the other debuted groups out to do the talk at this point even when a junior group was preparing to perform.
The top single for the past week was Hey! Say! JUMP’s “Weekender/Ashita e no YELL”, which sold 184,509 copies. That pretty much splits the difference between “AinoArika” (207,469) and “Ride With Me” (162,993), so it looks like this is the new standard for HSJ singles – around 185k in the first week.
“EXCUSE ME” from B.A.P took #2, selling 50,723 copies. If Wiki’s numbers are right, this is their best result on a Japanese single to date.
In at #3 was “Always with you” from Generations from EXILE TRIBE, which sold 44,777. Seems like a certain other single and album might have taken some sales away from this one, as this is lower than I would have expected from them.
Porno Graffiti’s “”Oretachi no Celebration” took #4 with 24,697 in sales.
At #5, “Kokoro no Placard” from AKB48 sold 21,546 copies to bring its two-week total to 1,027,320. That’s at the low end of second week expectations for a -48 family unit at 2%, which is already far below the normal 8-12 % I would look for.
In its sixth week, SKE48’s “Bukiyou Taiyou” popped from #21 to #8 by selling 14,896. Its new total is 435,645.
Nogizaka46 got a smaller bump-up in week nine of sales for “Natsu no Free & Easy”, going from #26 to #15, adding 6,477 for a grand total of 497,639.
The second week of sales for “Namida no Ato ga Kieru Koro” from V6 saw solid results at #16 – 6,355 more copies sold and 67,438 in total.
