Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou Ep 12 Review

Posted on: July 1st, 2012 by tylerraiz No Comments

This is the final episode of Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou (私立バカレア高校), and if you missed any of the earlier episodes, this review contains spoilers starting right after this sentence.

TatsuyaEpisode 12

At the end of episode 11, the boys had started the ultimate battle for the school while the girls assembled for the announcement that they would be returning to their old school. At the assembly, Fumie (Shimazaki Haruka) was allowed to speak, and began by saying something that she’s lucky Tatsuya (Morimoto Shintaro) wasn’t around to hear:

I Hate This School

Hating the school is, of course, a no-no on the boys’ side. But what is she up to? She can’t possibly mean that, right?

Watching this episode, I have one thought at the top of my mind: can one punch really turn all the Bakarea boys into wimps? Before this episode, I would have said “no way. Except for Shohei (Takaki Yuya), they don’t seem the types to ever back down from a fight.” But now . . . .

The One PunchTatsuya Down

Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou (私立バカレア高校) began with a boys school wracked with violence and mayhem. The school’s administration decided to inject a bit of a challenge to the status quo by importing a troop of highly disciplined and polite girls. While the boys have mostly gotten along with the girls after the first few episodes, they haven’t lost their fangs, and continue to do battle for their pride.

In episode 10, we started to see love interests blossoming and the four main characters becoming aware of the love square between them. We also discovered a new threat to Tatsuya’s (Morimoto Shintaro) domination of the neighborhood.

A New Threat

But I thought the result would be some serious warfare. Instead, the one punch seems to have knocked all the ferocity out of Tatsuya. Now, all he has is that silly confused look:

We pick up exactly where we left off in the previous episode of Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou (私立バカレア高校): with the girl responsible for trying to attack Cattleya’s pride on the web, Mana, saying that she did it because she hated Fumie (Shimazaki Haruka), the class president. I’m glad they began with this, because it left the conflict largely unresolved.

I hate you

Why does Mana feel this way about Fumie? Are there a lot of Cattleya girls who have these deep-seated animosities? We are going to find out the answer to . . . neither of those questions.

The guys are concerned about Mana’s betrayal, too, and show it by . . . well, mainly by staring furtively at the girls, actually.

Staring 1Staring 2

The guys were largely responsible for the fact that the school doesn’t live up to the expectations of the parents who send their girls there, so they certainly have to feel a bit guilty. I have to agree with Jesse-kun, though:

Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou Ep 09 Review + Announcement

Note: if you like this series, but don’t want to read this particular episode review, you might want to scroll to the bottom – there was a very important special announcement at the end of this week’s show.

This episode of Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou (私立バカレア高校) begins with a bit more of the gushy stuff, though instead of romance, the writers seem resolute about keeping it about “friendship.” So, we have Tetsuya (Matsumura Hokuto) and Tatsuya (Morimoto Shintaro) reflecting on how Fumie (Shimazaki Haruka) defended them at the end of the last episode and deciding that she thinks of them as friends:

Wondering About FumieMaybe We're Friends?

We already knew that Fumie was a bit more sympathetic to the boys’ way of looking at things, and now the boys themselves apparently get that picture, too. It’s tough not to see more in it than just friendship, though.

Gleam in his Eyes

Without too much time spent on that, we get to the main conflict of the episode – an article on the internet that challenges Cattleya‘s pride, noting that Cattleya’s second branch is not the same type of school as the original.

Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou Ep 08 Review

Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou (私立バカレア高校) has been going great all season, but we’ve got a problem: one of the girls has definitively fallen in love. Tetsuya’s (Matsumura Hokuto) valiant rescue of Saya (Oba Mina) in the last episode has swept her off her feet.

This is my second most dreaded school drama element: the romantic subplot. I hate romantic subplots. Fortunately, the gushiness is quickly broken up by the other half of love and war:

War 1War 2

And don’t worry, Tetsuya’s properly involved, despite being excluded from last week’s main battle:

Tetsuya in Battle 1Tetsuya in Battle 2

I did say romantic subplot, didn’t I? Well, the main plot this week is a magazine interview that the school is participating in. It’s a fashion magazine for high school girls, not some sort of yankee (or, if you’d like, battle royale) magazine, but there are side benefits for the guys – if they end up looking good, they might get popular with the ladies. So, they seem to be all for it:

Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou Ep 07 Review

Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou (私立バカレア高校) is a half-hour drama series featuring actors from Johnny’s Jr. and AKB48 battling for domination of a recently merged high school, and for the first time in the series, the focus of the episode is firmly on one of the girls. To be more specific, it’s on the Class Vice President, Saya (Oba Mina), who is being pursued at the start by a very unsavory character:

Being PursuedUnsavory Character

Meanwhile, the boys’ side is trying to get back into the swing of things (i.e. swinging at other people’s faces) after Tetsuya’s (Matsumura Hokuto) recent difficulties. Unfortunately, the memory of Tetsuya’s close call with the law makes them hesitant to get into trouble where they might be caught by authorities.

Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou Ep 06 Review

Well, I thought I could hold out for subtitles, but with the new episode appearing in less than a day, I couldn’t help myself.

If you haven’t been watching this drama, but have ever enjoyed a school drama before, definitely take the opportunity to catch up on Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou (私立バカレア高校). Unlike some of my other favorites in this genre, this one is serious in tone and tightly written. Even better, it continues to give me what I’m looking for, and I like it when writers seem psychic – it means they had their audience firmly in mind.

Shiritsu Bakarea Koukou

For example, after last episode focused firmly on two characters – one on the girl’s side (Sayuri) and one on the guy’s side (Maya) – I said I really wanted to see more of that, going through the characters individually or in pairs. After all, there are so many of them, and we had only gotten to know the two leads – Tatsuya (played by Morimoto Shintaro) and Fumie (played by Shimazaki Haruka) prior to the last episode.

Sure enough, this episode has that kind of focus, this time featuring Tetsuya (Matsumura Hokuto). Tetsuya has gotten a lot of screen time, and we know the character is both clever and stoic, but because he’s so stone-faced, we don’t know much about him. So, I’d have liked to see something on the characters that have gotten less time, but I’ll take it.
